In 2013, James Murphy, William Duke, and key members of the Afterburner team developed an unprecedented career planning program for transitioning veterans called the Military Leader Transition Seminar (MLTS). Designed as a preparation framework, the program empowers exiting service members by establishing the approach to transition as a stepping-stone of professional development rather than a solitary life event. Down Range takes the content of this day-long seminar and condenses it into a portable guide for civilian career transition.

Down Range is not simply a guide to transition from the military to the civilian world nor is it a guide to getting a job; Down Range is a manual for developing and executing a post-military career plan, not just for the first few days, weeks or months after active duty, but for the rest of that veteran’s employed life.

Down Range is unique in a number of ways, most notably because it is sourced from the experiences of successfully transitioned veterans. But beyond this, the impact of Down Range lies with the unparalleled experiences of Afterburner’s Executive Consultants, whose insight into the corporate world stems from years of consulting with the world’s top corporations. Outside of imparting the Lessons Learned of fellow veterans, Down Range leverages a simple and effective planning process used by today’s top businesses, The Six Steps of Mission PlanningSM.

"Simply outstanding! This book is a must read. The Afterburner team guided me in my successful transition using this same methodology resulting in my civilian job offer six months prior to retirement."

- Mark C. Gardner, COL, USA (ret)

"Down Range gives veterans the direction and advice they need to translate their military skills and experiences into the workplace competencies that companies so desperately need."

- Judy Morris, VP of HR, Sitel Americas

"Down Range gets our Vets pointed in the right direction and empowers them to take control of their post-military careers. It gives them the tools to become highly successful leaders in the civilian business world."

- Doug McClain, RADM, USN (ret)

"A must read for every Marine preparing to transition to the civilian work force. Down Range lays out a very practical way for a veteran to maximize outstanding military career experiences and bring that experience to the corporate work force."

- Gary G. Tolar, SgtMaj, USMC (ret)
